Good question! I hate Norton as well...this may sound stupid, but get Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0. It is very good and is only 14 mb compared to the huge size of Norton.
P.S - It's important to have an anti-virus no matter what because anything could happen to your computer.

I too had Norton. It was making the PC very slow.I could not update it. So I tried to uninstaal it. But some error occurred during the uninstallation process. Now I had to reformat and reload the whole Operating System. Best thing is to have a standard antivirus and anti spyware software. During my exercise I found a nunber of virus removal tools. Pl visit the following site and select a suitable free/ paid antivirus.

You also try to select and install a suitable anti spy ware from the following link to protect the Pc against spyware attacks.

Do not surf the web without anti-virus software. What will slow down your applications are registry issues and bugs planted by websites. Get a registry cleaner and anti-spyware. Also if you have not done a disk defrag lately, try that as well. You will find with both registry cleaner and anti-spyware that some program pathways and previous uninstalls are incomplete or broken and these tools "fix" the identified problems upon scanning.

thats one of the biggest complaints of norton. the files use too many resources, resulting in slow downs. its a great anti virus, if your packing a gig of ram. try not to resort to freeware antivirus, they are too limited and being a constant net user, your at greater risk of viruses. zone labs, and trend micro are always withing the top 3 antiviruses. and they dont use as much resources as norton, plus they both incorporate an anti spyware.

AVG paid is great, the free one has some limitations, but works well, and does not hog your system resources, also use ccleaner will make your system run faster its free, check all boxes down to advanced, and run check for problems, and delete them, free spybot and adaware is great to keep spyware from your computer wich can slow things down also, keep all updated, all should run fine. And run often.

The Anti-Virus is fine, but get rid of the anti-spyware and personal firewall that comes with the Symantec software.
