How to get rid of Trojan Horse w/o formatting???

Question

Help, I saw someone ask about viruses and an answer about AVG software. I ran it bc I knew my computer was in bad shape. So far (it's still scanning after 2.5 hrs) it has found 64 Trojan Horses. I don't want to reformat. I've done it before and these things keep coming back. Also, today I received a "return" email that kind of showed that my computer was being used to send out spam. What do I do???? Is reformatting my best option and what software would be good to install? I've used Ghostsurf in the past, but it doesn't even seem to work now.

Thanks for the replies. I've been running AVG for like 3 hours now and I think it's met it's match w/ my computer:) But I'll try all the things you guys have offered up and see if I can't salvage this "virus magnet" after all. This site rocks!

OK, what you need is a really good anti-spyware program that will get rid of all those trojans, keyloggers etc.
Now, the very best anti-spyware is: SuperAntiSpyware, the professional edition costs $29.95

The other one to try is CounterSpy. It costs $19.95 but you can get a free 15 day trial of the full edition software. I would try this first and if it works, stay with it. If it is still not strong enough, go for SuperAntiSpyware.

You have serious Malware and security issues to be addressed. As you already mentioned formatting is one way but they will come back, IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS. Therefore, consider these options:
1. You can individually delete trojans. Since trojans vary you simply do a google search on each one and then follow the directions to delete. Since Malware is rather tricky sometimes, such as virii being polymorphic. Polymorphic means the malware changes name, location, etc, and are very hard to remove. Some of them even disable antivirus software. You may not get them all this way.
Remember that YOU (or someone who used your computer) voluntarily downloaded the trojan
(you probably thought is was some cool smileys or maybe virus removal software).
2. The only real permanent long term solution is to dump that Virus magnet Windows software you have and get a good open source software, such as Kubuntu, instead at www.kubuntu.org

Hello. First thing I'd have you do friend is to download Microsoft's Malicious Tool Remover, and upon the download let it run. For the items it finds it will alert you. I'd also recommend getting Spyware Terminator (a great free app with real time antispyware defense) and AVG's latest... which will scan your pop3 email from Outlook Express.
