Yesterday I was on my Compaq Presorio R3000 just typing some family history on my Family Tree Maker 2005 in my living room. While I was typing I noticed that my laptop just froze and there was no movement. I thought that it might be overheating since I placed it on a Persian Rug, but I tried turning it on at least 3 times on a wooden, cold surface. Same effect. Then I went on Yahoo Answers and gathered up some information. One guy was saying that Zone Alarm might be the problem (which I had installed on my laptop). Another guy said that he used a computer duster to dust off the dust in the cooling fan. I tried that and didn't work. Then, out of the blue, my Norton Antivirus scanner says it detected and blocked a worm. What is going on with my computer? Is it overheating or is there a worm or virus present on my computer? The last time I went on I checked on Task Manager for the performance and this is what I had before it froze, again:
18% CPU Usage
396 Mb PF usage

This may sound like a stupid question to all you PC whizzes out there...

but how does upgrading memory work? if you have 512mb and you add 1gb,

do you have to take out the 512 or will you have 1.5gb?

I have a pc desktop and wireless wrt54g Linksys router, I also have a Gateway pc laptop with a wire card. This system works great. My question is if I was to purchase a Macbook would my existing system still work? In otherwords can I be on the Macbook in the bedroom, my son be on the Gateway in his room and it all work at the same time through the router in the home office? Or would I have to buy a router that would switch between the two and one of us could only be online at once? Please advise.

I got my daughter a laptop for Christmas and use a wireless router for her to access internet through our main computer. Our main computer has Windows 2000 and want her laptop to have this also. Is there a way to "transfer" the windows to her laptop also, or do I have to go out and buy the Windows program to install on her laptop? Or does she automatically have it since she's using the wireless router? As you can tell I'm clueless!

I recently purchased 512mb of RAM for my hp pavilion ze5600 (Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU 2.60 GHz it currently holds 706 of RAM. after I installed 512 mb card i notice little or no speed change when opening programs or files. I have McAfee virus scan installed as well as anti spyware software. I run these daily, but it seems my laptop does not run as fast as it should with all the RAM in it. My computer is fully updated as well (windows xp). Please help, I appreciate any feedback, thanks!

I have a compaq presario (R3000us) laptop bought in 2004. It has an AMD Athlon XP-M processor. However, the system info says 399 MHz. How many MHz equals 1 GHz? Also, I was planning to take off Windows XP and put on Windows Vista Business (and upgrade RAM). Will 399MHz processor handle 1GB of RAM. It has 512mb now. Is 399MHz low for 1gb ram or doesn't it work that way? Thanks!

Addl Info: I'm putting on Windows Vista because XP is not working correctly, some files are missing that make the computer run at full potential. I am not planning to reinstall XP. It's mainly an OS problem, not a computer hardware problem.
