it has a pentium m 1.60 GHz processor, and is too slow for many applications. can i upgrade the processor instead of the whole laptop? i have plenty of ram, so i know that's not the problem.

No.
The "M" series of Intel processors are permanently attached to the motherboard.

more than likely no ... and more than likely that processor is fine .. and more than likely upgrading ur harddrive to a fast one will be the single best thing with the most results u can do to speed it up ... and adding more memory may help slightly ... unless ur running an application like a video converter thats taking an hour for example ... u wont gain by upgrading processor .. and even then u would need a MUCH faster prcocessor to make a real difference .. like going to a 2.5ghz ... and then that "1 hour" would turn into 45 minuets ..

You may be able to upgrade to a slightly higher (e.g. 1.8) but remember the cooling etc, the included fan may not be good enough.

Best way is either to get more RAM (normally a cheap way to pep up performance a bit), or plump for a new laptop (i got a dell inspiron 1501 with dual core AMD turion tl56, 1024MB ram, 80gb HDD, 3years warrenty... for £600 inc vat, so they are quite good now adays)
