Does this shorten their life?

Hello there,

Yes, leave them in. That is what they are intended to do. I would recommend from time to time, draining the battery to totally dead. Let it run, let it die. Then charge it back up. This is like exercise for you battery.

These types of batteries should be drained about once a month, meaning you should run the battery down and then recharge. Otherwise, there is absolutely no harm in leaving the battery in. Leaving the battery in provides you with a power back up in case your electricity goes out in your house. That's something you can't do with a PC.

it doesnt shorten the lifespan of modern batteries (any lithium-ion battery still working would be considerd modern)
