Here you go: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/capable.mspx
Since it's a laptop, there's a good chance the graphics card isn't up to snuff. You need a DX9 compatible card with 128MB of video memory, or in other words, an NVidia Geforce FX 5xxx series or higher, or an ATI Radeon 95xx series or higher. On the NVidia side, though, I wouldn't go lower than a Geforce 6xxx series.

if you have a processor of over 1ghz,at least 1gb ram ,and a graphic card(or adapter) that is better than a geforce fx5200 or ati 9550,then vista should run on your laptop
however most laptops are not equiped with powerful enough graphic processors, and memroy is another area were the manufacturers try and save money
to be sure why not run the windows vista upgarde advisor(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx)
this will give you a report on what parts of your laptop need upgrading and what are ok,but again if your garphics card(adapter) is not good enough you wont be able to upgrade this as most graphics on a laptop are built into the motherboard, making it impossible to upgrade
when looking for new laptops look for the "vista capable" holographic sticker on the case to be sure it will run vista, this also goes for desktop p.c,s
good luck

As an old Computer Field Engineer, don't even mess with Vista for a minimum of a year. There will be many bugs and patches coming from Microsoft during the first year. XP (with SP2) is a good solid package that will serve you well for a long time.

Can't really tell from that without knowing what you have in it? To run windows vista, you need at least a Modern Processor, dual core is better, 512 mb ram, but really you need 1g ram for it to run smoothly, and you also need a graphics card with 128 mb ram, capable of producing the windows aero! Go to this website and run the upgrade advisor, it will tell you what you need to do to upgrade and also advise on the best edition for you!

First of all do u have a 64-bit processor if u dont then dont even bother, u also need more than 2gigs of ram, and last of all I dont recommend upgrading in like 6 months to a year so Microsoft can get rid of all of the bugs and flaws.
trust me an uncle of mine who is a computer technician told me this

Go to this website and click "Take the Test". It will scan your computer and tell you what areas pass and fail.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/vistaready/default.asp
If you get all passes in the left column you can handle Vista :).

If newer than two years old then should be OK, if older then it may run it but would not advise upgrading,
