I got my daughter a laptop for Christmas and use a wireless router for her to access internet through our main computer. Our main computer has Windows 2000 and want her laptop to have this also. Is there a way to "transfer" the windows to her laptop also, or do I have to go out and buy the Windows program to install on her laptop? Or does she automatically have it since she's using the wireless router? As you can tell I'm clueless!

Like I said, I'm clueless! I didn't know that laptops came with a better version than Windows 2000 already on it.

If you purchased the laptop through a reputable dealer, the system should already have Windows on it. (That is the Operating system). If not, (you purchased it third party or via a company buyout), than most likely the system will be blank. You would need to go out and buy an operating system for it. Easiest way of course is just to turn it on and see if it goes into Windows XP/2000/ME etc..

If that's the case, be sure to use your daughters student discount to purchase the operating system. It's considerably cheaper.

You will have to install window 2000 on the laptop too. But is there a reason you want to install windows 2000 on the laptop too? You cannot transfer windows from one computer to the other.. There is so much involved in it. If you want to install Windows2000 on the laptop you will need a Authentic Windows 2000 CD/DVD or a MSDN version of Windows 2000...

You can't transfer windows from one computer to another. The installation is a lot more complicated than file transfers, and involves installing the right things to run components on a laptop.

I'm curious as to why you want to take her machine down to Win 2000. I'm assuming that since her computer is new, that it has a version of Win XP on it. Win XP evolved out of Win2K. Microsoft is going to stop supporting Win2K with security updates, if it hasn't already. There's no reason I can think of that would make it a good idea to take her laptop down to Win2k.
