Apple offers great student discounts. :) That aside it depends on what department/college you are in. Graphics/Liberal arts oriented tend to have Macintosh, Engineering/Hard science tends to have PCs.

Probably the 'cool factor'. MAC came out with laptops of various colors and designs before PC laptop manufacturers did. They do make good machines.. they're just too expensive for my tastes, for what you get, and then there are the software limitations to consider.

Students may choose any computer they like. They are not forced to use a special brand or os by their employer.
