I was just sitting here on my computer and a blue screen popped up. I couldn't read what it said and then it rebooted. I typed in my username/pass and when I got back into windows ALL of my files (pictures, music, school papers, etc.) were gone. All of my programs are still installed but all of the files are gone. This happened maybe 15 minutes ago...

I have a new (less than a year old) Compaq laptop with Windows XP Home Edition...

I am trying to buy a computer and the market has dried up. I had one picked out and everything around Christmas but I drug my heels and they are gone. What is available are all those "student" computers with "half-cache" cpus and little memory.

The copmputer is not reading the battery at all even when plugged in. The battery icon only shows an "x". Also - when I turn the computer upside down and depress the buttons on the battery, the light flashes green and then goes off quickly.

I put a DVD in my laptop. It wouldn't play. I tried to eject it and the tray pops open barely but I can't pull it open the rest of the way. It releases but it's like something inside is holding it so I don't want to pull too hard and break it. Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this? Any help is much appreciated. I also tried the manual eject hole and still the same problem.

My computer doesn't hibernate, it freezes. If I am using the Internet and step away for 10 minutes, I will have to reboot to get a connection. If I close the lid (it's a notebook), I will have to reboot to get online. Isn't this damaging to my computer? I usually turn it off and unplug it when I am not using it so it does not overheat. So I am always starting it upas it is.
