I just bought a MacBook Pro. When I plugged in using the power cable, the battery does not charge. Help?

The copmputer is not reading the battery at all even when plugged in. The battery icon only shows an "x". Also - when I turn the computer upside down and depress the buttons on the battery, the light flashes green and then goes off quickly.
