I have a Compaq Presario 1700 laptop that's a few years old now. It's got a Pentium III with a 1000MHz CPU, 256MB RAM (two 128MB sticks), and a 20GB hard drive (of which I have about 1GB free space). Since I only have two memory slots and both are used up by 128MB sticks, I'm thinking of replacing one of them with a 256MB stick (according to Compaq's web page, the laptop is only upgradable to 512MB). I would love to replace both with two (2) 256MB sticks so I have the max of 512MB total (or better yet, buy a new laptop), but I only have enough in my budget for one (1) 256MB stick, for a new total of 384MB (128MB in slot one plus 256MB in slot two). My question is, will an extra 128MB of RAM even make much difference in my situation, or should I save my money?
