Try to look at Best Buy. That's where I got my laptop. A good price would be around $800-$1000 which would give you a good enough laptop plus its Vista ready. (It actually depends on how you will be using it though)
Nice brand would be HP Pavillion, Dell, Apple (if budget is not an issue), or Toshiba.

Unless you need something fancy, shoot for a $400 to $600 laptop that is on sale. AMD or Celleron is fine for most purposes. You can usually get them on sale at CompUSA, BestBuy, Circuit City, etc cheaper than you can get from Ebay. And you can take it back if it has a problem in the first few months. Don't go for all the gimicks. -- just buy the cheapest laptop and get an extra stick of ram. The salesmen will push for you to get a service agreement or to insure the screen and battery. Say "No, if this one breaks in three years, I'll sell the parts on ebay and buy one that is much faster."

Beachbaby needs to stick with what he knows, which obviously is not computers. For your information, Intel does not make computers, they make processors. Dell uses both Intel and AMD processors in their laptops. And anyone that recommends Dell, does not know what they are talking about. Dell and reliable are never, ever used in the same sentence anymore. Their quality has slipped over the last two years. And whoever said to avoid Mac is full of it also. IBM/Lenovo and Apple make the best laptops today. They are the two most reliable and best performing laptops around. Do not take my word for it, check out the provided links and then make an informed decision.

The Mac G5 Power Book is the best lap-top computer on the market. The best place to buy in the Apple Store in any major shopping mall.

for a good laptop with good specs: about $1500-$1700 assuming that you want at least an 80gb hard disk, 2 gigs of ram, a core 2 processor, and at least 128 or 256mb of discrete graphics. try newegg or bestbuy or circuit city or buy directly from the manufacter

Well, the macbooks are the best notebook computers you can buy. But they are expensive (worth it much). Do not buy a dell, they suck (bad experience).
I havnt looked at too many non mac notebooks because I will not waste my time on another machine made for windows (crap).

Well HP is a great computer as well as Compaq. I'm not sure what cheap is to you. I mean you get what you pay for. The more you pay, the better the computer (usually).

Dell. You should get a decent one with 1Gb memory, DVD burner, 15.4 inch screen, and at least a 1.8Ghz processor for under $1000.
