There are a few "mechanical moving parts" to a computer incomparison the the rest of the machine. What that means is that theres wear and tear thus a shorter life expectancy as opposed to other non mechanical parts of the computer. Two of those mechanical parts are 1. the fan for you power supply 2. the fan that cools your CPU.
Obviousley the more you use them the more of its life you're using. Should your CPU fan fail it will overheat your computer and can do some terrible damage to the motherboard. Either way i'm sure this will be costly to you and a terrible inconvenience
You also leave your computer open to spikes from brownouts etc

yes....its an old myth to leave a computer on. to leave it on, even in hibernate, keeps the processor running and it stays hot....extended lengths of heat on the gold contacts can make them break down if not actually break over time.
do you leave your TV on? do you leave the vacuum cleaner on? do you leave the microwave running non stop when not in use? these are all nothing more than electronically gadgets....the same as a computer....so why would you leave a computer on?
plus a computer that is on, even if in hibernate, can be accessed by outside sources. most hackers actually look for machines in sleep mode cause its easier to enter and troll around without anyone knowing.

In general? Yes, leaving it on is bad. If the computer is on and the system is running it is still fragmenting the hard drive (even if it is extremely slow). Also, it's just common sense, you leave it on and entropy takes it's toll. Kind of like if you were able to leave your car idling all the time. Definitely not good for the engine in the long run. If you don't have to or it's just something you don't mind doing, shut it down. Unless you don't like the boot up...

Well, if your going to leave it on like that try to get some Program for watching the Heat in your computer just in case ... such as Intel Active Monitor this program watches the heat in certain major parts of your computer and warns you if something is getting to hot or not...

Personally, I always turn mine off when I am done for the day, unless there is a spy cleaner program scheduled the next morning.
Whether from paranoia, or just habit, I don't usually let it run all night, and for sure wouldn't let it stay up for days at a time.
But that is just me.

Yes. Turning it on and off is good because it will shut down programs and starting it will install updates and other things.
Turn off your lappy once a week or every few days.
I thought you'd like a short answer, because everyone else gave boring ones.

No I do not think it is bad, because i have a computer and it has been on for about 2yrs. straight. Only when i leave town do i turn it off. And it still runs good....all i do at night is put it on Standby. and shut the screen off yourself.

hybernation means its off, turning it off at the switch would make no differance. while hybernating the drives dont spin, the fans dont spin, the power suply isnt even suplying power to anything anymore.
at any rate, it wont harm it to leave it on as long ad you are using decent hardware
Nunoyvgvna Awi::
a computer that is in hybernation mode CAN NOT be accessed from the outside. you are thinking of system standby mode.

It dont hurt them at all, i never turn mine off unless I have to. Just put the computer on a battery backup if you can, or a surge protector rated over 1000 jouels, just to protect the senistive electronics.
