I am buying a laptop from Hp for myself and the operating system available is Windows Vista...my mom bought a laptop from Hp just a few weeks ago and she got Windows XP on hers which is what I was wanting. I've never heard of Windows Vista before and that's making me leary of getting an HP laptop now because I have no clue what it is...is it just an improvement on XP or what?

It's likely to be windows vista capable.
But anyways I didn't like it. Sometimes we would go to a site and it would just lock the computer up.It's rather new and still hasn't had must experience with.I like windows xp. The only difference in vista that we found is that the desk top had cool new features and transluscent desktop images. The recycle bin is a cd spinning instead of a trash bin. But,anyways I would stick to the old xp.

Its just a newer version of Windows like you have windows 95 , 98 ME, Xp then Vista. It supposedly has more features and other stuff that make it better than XP.

It's a little early for critics. The basic answer is that it is the newest disk operating system from Microsoft. It has more features and requires more resources than Windows XP.
I cannot say which is better. Good luck!
