The best way I can think of is to show there will be a payback for their investment. For instance, if you are using this for school a better GPA would be a significant payback. Albeit long term, but still payback.
If you can guarantee them, lets say a 3.0 GPA or better or you will either pay them back at a predetermined rate until your GPA improves on the next quarter, or if you don't have a job you will do certain tasks around the house. (After all, this laptop is supposed to safe you tons of time isn't it?)
At any rate, I'm sure as with most parents, they just want to see you succeed. If you can show a laptop will significantly improve the chances of that happening they will feel it was money well spent.

Yeah, you should convince them that you really need a laptop or a better computer to do important things such as doing assignments and stuff, and tell them that your old computer, if you have one, does not do such task efficiently.
Make sure you have to justify why the old computer does not work for you. You could help your parents by giving them the cheapest laptops but still in good quality. I like dell laptops.
It is OK if your parents give you a second hand laptop because in some cases you can easily add more parts such as memory to suffice your needs.

Make a spread sheet of all the prices of the laptops you were thinking of getting and compare prices from high to low,and give them the puppy dog face ( works every time.) Not guranteed with something a large as a laptop ;}

Ok, explain how you can't lug around a full size pc with you.
Next show them current examples of laptop prices vs Pc prices.
Ask them for a laptop that will cost less than a Pc that you point out and find through a flyer or something. They have to be able to see it. If it's cheaper than a pc, why not? And it will help with homework etc...
OH yes, tell them it uses half the electricity

googles the system you want and find all the promotionms offer..note them...make sure you slide your needs in there if they dont appear. Next prove to them that you are responsible for the system and even offer some sort of pay back plan that will allow them to get some cash back...i have laps for discounted prices so if that doesnt work hit me up

I used the classic:
I need a desktop for educational reason. The best thing about desktops is that they last so much longer and I told them it would be really usefull for my GCSE.
I still have the same pc 4 months prior to going to uni.

Do you have a computer now for every person in your family? If not, this could be away to get one. Because if people want to get online and all the computers are taken. Then it might get them to buy another one.

Oh, there are dozens of ways. One sure one would be getting you off of THEIR computer. Another would be that you might use it at school. Just think of things you could do with it. Try to make it CONSTRUCTIVE things. Saying that this notebook or that one go with your eyes probably won't get results.

Get a job and pitch in some of the money for it.
Chances are you really don't need one. Don't be a spoiled a brat and throw a tantrum for one.
