That's completely normal. It just dims to improve battery time (by which i mean so you have longer battery time by decreasing display brightness) because the lower the display brightness the less power the display requires thereby allowing more power to stay on the battery until required by another component (such as a CD/DVD drive or USB port)

Restart and press f8 this will get into the bio change the settings for dimming on battery. Keep in mind that when you change the setting for this not to dim on battery power that this will cause your computer use more of the battery. Example you now have 3 hours of power after change you will have only an hour an a half.

Notebooks generally have power profiles. Right-click on the battery in your System Tray and choose Properies. Change the brightness setting for the profile for the battery.

goto start/control panel/ power management, and change to battery settings to what you want, click apply
