You didn't give a whole lot of detail, so I'm going to go over a couple of things...

1) If there is a wireless connection, a virus can go accross to the laptop when you are on line.
2) If a CD/DVD is used and there is a virus on it, the virus can go to your lap top.
3) If neither of the above are involved, your laptop can NOT catch a virus.

You can get a virus from any point of contact. If you're not physically plugged into a network, there's always wireless connections, emails, or any media such as, flash drives, cd's, dvd's, floppy disks. Anything you can read a file from has the potential to carry a virus.

Computer virus can be "installed" on a computer only through a program. Such infected program can be delivered either through internet (using wire or WiFi) or just installing a program from a CD.

So it can catch a virus even when it is not connected to a line.

No, if any CDROMs you enter are virus free as well. By line I assume you include any internal network including wireless networks, as well as external networks such as the internet. This also assumes your original OS does not have a "trap door" virus, which may not be a 100% vaild assumption in these dishonest days.

Everyone has pretty well covered the question except for one point if you use say a flashdrive i.e usb flash drive from someone else then could have virus on it, or mmc card from someone else. or a program you buy from a supspect source your not completly safe trust nothing is the safest option.

Yes !

You do not have to be connected to a line (internet) to get a virus. Your computer can get a virus from media that you insert (usb files, programs, cd's).
