I am trying to buy a computer and the market has dried up. I had one picked out and everything around Christmas but I drug my heels and they are gone. What is available are all those "student" computers with "half-cache" cpus and little memory.

Right now there are no deals because people are still paying for Christmas, there are no buyers. Wait about a month, then check with the laptop manufacturers' websites. February and March is when they put alot of models on clearance, you'll get some great deals. I bought this laptop 2 years ago Mid Feb, 2.6Ghz Celeron, 30 GB HD, DVD/CD burner, 512 MB memory for $699. It's been great, but it's been in service 24/7 for two years in a motor vehicle, I may be upgrading in the next month or two as well.

I used to buy computers at market price, but realized that was rather crazy, when a computer can be built with little trouble for half the price and twice as much power. I'd recommend if you have even the slightest bit of hardware knowledge that you go to tigerdirect and just order the parts you need to build one.

Get a custom built one. If you go to those nerd computer shops, they'll build one for you, just tell them what you want.
