I sent my laptop for repair to this random guy from an ad in the newspaper. The problem could've been fixed by a simple re-installation of WIndows, but I bought my laptop without a CD drive, so he had to install a cd drive in order to fix the problem. He THEN told me that the boot sector of my hard drive had damaged files, so in order to make the laptop useable at all, the disc had to be re-written. He has now started writing on the wiped disc.. does this mean there is absolutely NO way to get my data back? I'm SO upset..I spent last year in Guatemala and have lost ALL my pictures. I'm completely clueless when it comes to computers, so if anyone could offer me a shred of hope, it would mean SO much to me... but no false hope, plz.. I've had enough disappointment already! :(

Rigth now the laptop has 2X256mb (400mhz) ram chips filling the 2 slots. Do you think it would be best to remove both of the current chips and replace them with the larger faster 1gb ram (leaving the other slot emply) or should I keep one of them in (=1.25gb total)?

It must have a CD player/writer and at least 2 USB ports. I don't understand the difference between processors but most of the sites I've looked at offer celeron in this price range. I don't know what else I should be looking for apart from memory. Which is the best brand? Dell, Hewlett Packard, Packard Bell?

I have an HP Pavilion laptop,When in use the processor speed varies depending on the applications I am using. The problem is when I try to use other applications there is a lag time in their response because the processor is not at full speed. How do I make the processor run at 100% all the time? I have set the power options to always on, but this hasn't helped.

After many "hangs" and frozen pages, I downloaded Intel's processor ID which informed me that my BIOS was not fully compatible with my P4 Celeron and from further info I have gleaned, it seems the BIOS sure is the problem.

Hi there. I have a Pentium 3 notebook which i hope to access the wireless broadband, which type of adapter will you recommend me: PCMCIA or USB?

Some of my considerations will be i am not sure if my notebook (about 4 yrs old) support USB 2.0 and technically speaking is USB much stable and faster compare to PCMCIA?

I also have a Pentium 4 desktop (without wireless capability too).

lastly, what does it mean unsecure broadbank access?

thank you for yout time and help in advance. i need to go to buy the adapter in 1/2 hour time.

my laptop is from 2003, outdated by todays standards thats for sure.. but it works fine with a couple of programs.. but if i put about 4 medium sized programs.. which isn't a lot, its limewire, fruity loops(an older version) a picture program, and the internet.. it crashes.. and then i have to use the os disk to get it running again.. is it the harddrive? what?? i do not care to get some different parts.. maybe more memory, or whatever else it might need. could it be a virus i once had.. i do download...?if so, what could get rid of it.. i have had some guys remove everything completely, install new drivers, and have been through this twice, and also have reinstalled windows from the os disk multiple(around 8) times over the past couple of years.. now i just use if for the internet and to download songs.. but i would like to at least have it hold 4 programs without crashing? and right now i cannot afford another laptop.. any suggestions??

How can I figure out what kind of processor I have, and then once I figure that out, how do I know where my processor ranks.

Basically, when I go to buy games, I don't know what processor I have and can't tell if my comp can handle them or not.

Help me computer nerds!

I can reconnect it but it grabs my neighbors "very low" signal and disconnect from my "very good" connection every few minutes. My wireless router (2Wire 1800HG) is in the same room, neighbors are 1-200 yards away. I don't have this problem with 3 other wireless PCs on the same network located throughout the house. Could I have a bad card (motherboard chip) on a 14 mo old laptop (it's been doing it quite a while)? I've tried disabling and re-enabling the connection and looked for a driver update (couldn't seem to get it to update) as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, could my company's version of XP be causing problems with my 2wire router but like my neighbors linksys?

I thought leaving it plugged in would not use the battery at all since the power is coming from the adapter (and not the battery). Am I wrong?

Although I among many must move to MS Windows Vista OS software in the near future,
Is it right to keep my good processor 2G Centrino?
or
Should I replace it by a Dual Core in order to run Windows Vista?
If I maintain my 2G solo processor centrino, will it decently run?
