A new Macbook can cost as little as $1099, which is just over $1000 (I know you want to go under, but this is in the same neighborhood).

You might be thinking: "No way! I can buy a laptop with similar specs for a lot less money." That is certainly true, but there is added value that the specs don't tell you. Apple notebooks tend to be very well designed, and remember that the software that comes with it is several times better than what comes with most laptops (ie MS Windows). You may not believe that Mac OS and its software are that great, but I recommend it to you as a student of computer science as well as someone who has had long, hard experience with a variety of personal computer operating systems.

I'm sure lots of people are against my recommendation, but this is my opinion of "best" (you asked for best, not cheapest, right? ;)

One of the guys said it right...you are not going to get a very good laptop for under 1000. I would say go EBAY though and look for a dell, sony, or apple macbook. And no like many of the idiots tell you the Mac operating system is not better than windows, Its all just personal preference even though any computer science major will tell you windows is better in every way. Luckily you have a choice and can install Windows, linux or any other operation system on the new macbook though. I would look at the older dells if you want to go under 1000 like the inspiron 8600...very nice laptop that goes for around $600 right now.

Hi Will,
I don't agree with some of the other answers. I say you can get a great laptop under $1000. What I would do is go to cheapest prices search engine and shop the internet including ebay and most of all of the other stores.
Also you can read many good reviews about laptops.

that really depends on what you plan on doing with it and how hard you wanna work it. Generally more RAM, faster speeds, and higher capacities are better but cost more. If you're just checking some email, listening to music and stuff then you don't need much and there are a lot you could get to do that for even $700. But if you're gonna game on it and do photshop/video editing, sorry, $1000 for a laptop to do that means you're buying a crappy laptop. Averatec and even the sony VAIO's are nice laptops if you know where to look for them.

averatec is probably one of the best laptops brands that i've used for under $1000. It's light, small and looks attractive with its white color.
