Laptops & Notebooks - October 2006

Basically, a friend of my parents has bought a second hand IBM ThinkPad, and it's being an annoying little b****.

It loads and runs fine, but after about 5-10 minutes, I get a blue memory dump screen come up and then it reboots itself too quickly for me to read that screen.

It runs Windows XP Home SP2, and I'm attempting to use my Windows XP Professional SP2 full install disc to reinstall Windows on it to see if it makes any difference, but it only lasts about 5 minutes, which hasn't given it enough time to load all the setup files.

Any ideas?

My friend says she needs help. I don't understand the situation seeing as I know very little about laptops.

But apparently it has something to do with Transformers, and wanting to charge her laptop while it's still one.

She says it's plugged in, and yet it doesnt' charge. Any suggestions? =/

First of all, I was wondering how much an iBook G3 (NOT the round, colorful kind) is worth. It is in perfect working condition, thought it has a very few amount of unnoticable scratches here and there. It includes the charger, which works, except that the prongs sort of snapped off, but when tapped back (and I tried this) it is fully functional.

Please do not post just a link where I can find values, PLEASE provide an exact value or range of values.

Secondly, I need to know how to convince someone to buy if for at the very, very, very least of $170, because thats how much I payed for it, but I know it could be worth $100 more. This requires so-called "salesman" skills, which I hope some of you posess.

I am seriously considering switching from my IBM ThinkPad of 4 years (this hurts... I love this machine) to one of the new Intel Based Mac Book Pro's... I am going to run Parallels so I can still use Windows 2000 since I have a BlackBerry and those don’t Sync with Macs.

Has anyone out there done this? Did you have any problems? The only apps I run are word, outlook and excel. My databases are in filemaker and I use all adobe apps for publishing/video/photo. I would transition all that to the mac side.

How does the unit work when both platforms are running at the same time?

Also wondering if anyone has use the new Verizon Aircard on the mac and on the pc side... Did it work ok?

My fan's been really loud the past year and my computer sometimes shuts down without warning. The base of the computer also gets extremely hot sometimes and it's worrying!

How much will it cost to replace my fan? I'm pretty tight with money at the moment.

I am looking to buy my first laptop, and every store says theirs is the best. I just need one to browse the net, download some music, burn a few cd's and load photos. Which is the one to go with? Hi guys, I need to buy a laptop within a week. Please help me decide on to something. I'm not sure of which brand to buy in terms of reliablity and after sales support. okay, so i got a message that was popping up in the righthand corner of my laptop screen. It said "computer is infected!" and some other stuff about how i had a spyware infection. Well, naturally i went and downloaded all this crap like antispyware and then got this thing that only allows me to access web pages through a firewall...so anywho, my little infection went away. BUT, while i was doing all that, somehow the picture i had set as my desktop background just like disappeared. So, i went into "properties" on my desktop, and selected backgrounds trying to set a new background and blah blah...well come to find out, they don't allow me to even click on then anymore. (They're all like greyed out and non-clickable) They seem like now they're inactive or something. So now i'm mad and all that jazz. What would have made my backgrounds stop working? I didn't touch any of those settings. Or how can i get them functional again? Any input helps besides dumb pointless ****. : ) thank u much.

I need to take a typing test soon and am unable to type quickly because the "e" on my computer keybord only works sometimes. I have to hit it over and over and then it works. Sorry if this question is dumb, but is there a way that can take my computer keybord off in an attempt to fix it myself without damaging the interior hardware. I am not a computer wiz, as you can tell....lol.. I already used the electronic dust spray and it didn't help. Please someone....HELP! Im using a Dell Latitude 600 laptop with S-Video Tv output. When I connect the S Video cable from the computer to the tv via a Scart adaptor. I only get a Black & White image. Have trying all the color settings PAL/NTCS etc. Any suggestions?

I never had a problem with plugging in a usb mouse or keyboard in the past, it would automatically install, about a week ago i connected a usb mouse to my laptop and it displayed "usb device detected" and then requesting drivers, i tried all 4 ports and no joy, i tried another mouse and that too is asking for drivers, i tried mice that previously worked and no joy, i tried a usb keyboard that i previously used and no joy, i don't recall any major software changes, i did start using the standby feature recently as i stopped using hibernation, please help as this is rather annoying....
