i need to know how to find out which usb i have an item that requires a 2.0 is there a way to check without opening what i bought

check the manual that came with the machine.
or goto the control pannel. system device manager then usb controllers and it should say either 1.0. 1.1 or 2.0
there is programs out that that will give large amounts of technical info about your machine but thats the easy way.

Open the device manager and look at your usb ports. If you don't see "enhanced" for the controller they are 1.1. Your device will probably run at the slower speed, or you can stick a pci card in if you have a free slot. 2.0 came with XPsp2. You also need that installed. Having said all that, I use both and find little difference EXCEPT downloading. Bear in mind that the port will only download what it gets. If you have dialup or dsl, don't waste your money.
