Asus have a very good reputation for the quality of their machines, very few complaints here. In fact, Apple contracted them to construct their new macbook lines.

I have an Acer laptop, my mother does, and my wife does. A friend of mine bought one recently and seems happy with it. They are a good value.
However, based on the feedback from other posters to this question (and at least one other I have seen) if the Asus is price-competitive it could be a better deal.
Without comparing Acer to other brands, I would recommend the Acer Aspire line of laptops without reservation. Lots of functionality, little or no junkware in the factory build, comes with usable software, and all the hardware that I would expect in a laptop. (OK, maybe a multi-card reader would be nice, but you can plug a gadget into USB to get that...)
Good luck with it.

I have an ACER travelmate 2410, so far it has been bullet proof. I have dropped on the ground, spilled wine on the keyboard and installed lot's of software without a glitch, ever.
My opinion is that acer is competitive with the technology that is inside the box. Mine has a celeron M 1.5 gig processor, 1 gig of ram (upgraded from 512) and it screams. Wireless g, modem, dvd, cd, bluetooth, 15' screen, the list goes on, but the price was less than $800 (US).
Go for it if the Acer is cheaper, you wont regret it.

I'm using an Acer Aspire 5502WXMi laptop and so far am satisfied with its performance. The price is not so bad either. If you're on a limited budget look at the Acer Travelmate laptop series.

Acer is better and more reliable. I know many of my friends using Acer and none of them have any major complaints so far.
