I never had a problem with plugging in a usb mouse or keyboard in the past, it would automatically install, about a week ago i connected a usb mouse to my laptop and it displayed "usb device detected" and then requesting drivers, i tried all 4 ports and no joy, i tried another mouse and that too is asking for drivers, i tried mice that previously worked and no joy, i tried a usb keyboard that i previously used and no joy, i don't recall any major software changes, i did start using the standby feature recently as i stopped using hibernation, please help as this is rather annoying....

The drivers will still be there. So go through the motions of "add new hardware" (in control panel) & if it asks for where to locate drivers then tell it to look in C:\WINDOWS\system32

In that case you really need to install the driver it is requesting. To install the driver you can follow the instructions on the screen for windows to search the driver or download the driver from the net and key in the path when windows request you to install the driver. FYI to search for drivers you can type in your "mouse name"+"driver" on google or yahoo and download the respective file.

Alternatively, try performing windows update that solves your problem!

GOOD LUCK!

You need at uninstall all of your USB ports. Press start, right click My computer, properties, hardware, device manager. Now you have a list of hardware find the USB ports. Click the + sign and right click each one - updating the driver may do it. But you may have to un-install all of them. Then re-start your computer and XP will re-install them all and away you go!
