I sent my laptop for repair to this random guy from an ad in the newspaper. The problem could've been fixed by a simple re-installation of WIndows, but I bought my laptop without a CD drive, so he had to install a cd drive in order to fix the problem. He THEN told me that the boot sector of my hard drive had damaged files, so in order to make the laptop useable at all, the disc had to be re-written. He has now started writing on the wiped disc.. does this mean there is absolutely NO way to get my data back? I'm SO upset..I spent last year in Guatemala and have lost ALL my pictures. I'm completely clueless when it comes to computers, so if anyone could offer me a shred of hope, it would mean SO much to me... but no false hope, plz.. I've had enough disappointment already! :(

Ugh.. I know! HUGE regret for dropping my laptop off at someone's apartment after contacting them from the newspaper. I'm thinking of posting my own ad, claiming that I repair diamond rings...

I would hold little hope for recovering your files. Did you make it clear that you had data you needed to recover on the system? If so, and this guy overwrote your disk without giving you advance notice and the option of recovering the files before the repair, he is a hack.

Your going to have to talk to the guy that your dealing with and ask him if he's backed up any of your data. If he's a real computer guy he should have backed up all your data and information in order to restore it to your computer before he returns it. If he didn't do this then most likely your data is lost. However there are ways to retrieve data from a computer even after wipping a hard drive clean, some FBI type stuff but I wouldn't count on that. So get the status from the guy your working with, and ask him.

If the guy fixing your computer knows how to do things right he would have backed up the files from your hard drive onto a few CDs or DVDs. If he hasn't wiped your hard drive yet call him NOW and tell him to stop. Let him know you want the files on the drive backed up. If he won't do it take the computer to someone who knows what there doing.

Good Luck

who ever is fixing it doesnt know what they are doing. there are many ways to fix the boot sector with out reformatting your computer. it can be done through the recovery console with the cd or you can run a windows repair with the cd both options would have fixed it with no data loss. i would not pay that person i also would not let them finish the job its obvious they dont know what they are doing. im sorry you lost your stuff. that sucks!

Hi,

If the pictures are worth over $1000, then you might consider sending the hard drive in to data recovery specialists. There are experts who can even recover information from hard drives which were damaged due to 9/11 (GOD Bless), however the price is really high.

You might like to consult our experts at http://www.maincorporated.in/ for any help locating such a specialist around you.

whoa that's bad! You could have simply called the Win xp support to help you out. I think there could be a way to retrieve data, but Win xp does not help you do that as they do not want to be responsible for lost data of customers.

I think the best way for you is to visit an authorized showroom and seek help. A person can get upto 2 free cases with Microsoft so you could also call toll free win xp support.

I know nothing about computers either.

I'm just sending you a note to say I'm sorry for you to have (probably) lost all your stuff.

But the present is more imporant than the past.
