I just need a reliable desktop computer to get through 3 more years of college and then I will get a very nice one (probably Apple) or build my own then b/c I'll have more time to put it together & money. Right now I just need something i can use through college. Any suggestions, and WHY use that one?

Is there any possibility it burned out any of my pci cards or internal drives or would it just be motherboard/memory/or possibly a power supply unit/video card problem?

We bought an older computer a couple of years ago for Christmas. We use it to play games on and stuff. It is now running Windows 95. We have a newrer computer we use for the business and internet. We bought XP for it. I want to use our XP and put it on the older pc. But for the life of me I can't find the reg number for it. Is there some place on my newer pc that I can go to that will give me the number? I paid enough for it - i should be able to put it on any of my pc's i want. Thanks in advance.

I bought some PC133 ram for my computer that is a few years old off eBay, and I didn't check it, the guy sent me PC400 DDR ram. I just halfway clipped them in and wondered why they weren't fitting the whole way because I was in such a hurry to get the ram in. So I go to start it up and smell some burning and nothing happens, so I turned off the computer immediately and pulled out some smoking hot ram. Now the computer wont even boot with the old ram in. I'm guessing all I burnt out was the slots for the ram on the motherboard. Is it possible by doing this and using something with the wrong voltage can burn out anything but my motherboard like - (pci cards, hard drives, dvd drives, etc.)? Everything else still seems to work normally when I start, power light on tower and the monitor just dont come on. Was planning on getting new CPU, motherboard, computer case, ram, vid card - keeping everything else... Should this solve my problem?

What are good video cards for my S3100n slimline PC of 160W and costs less than 120USD.
I also have a HP laptop TX1320 with 128 dedicated and 271 shared video memory (totally 399MB). It lags when I play FullHD or 720P video.
That is on laptop. But on PC, a 256 video memory low profile PCI -E with low watt is enough to play those videos without lagging?

Hi all, I just relocated from a different state. Unfortunately I had to keep most of my stuff at a U-Haul storage place for a while till I found my own place. I kept my Desktop PC in there for a month, and after plugging it in at my new apartment everything is lagging. From the Graphics to the refresh rate, I mean everything. Example is I used to play most of my Games at this desktop with relative ease, now the graphics is like lagging, slow and everything. I am so tempted to reformat, but because of the move I dont even know where my Drivers and installation discs are. I tried defragmenting and everything but to no avail. Any suggestions?

I GB memory vs 2 GB for someone who is not a gamer and only uses the PC for e-mail, internet searches, and college work - - also, hard drive: 320 GB vs 250GB.
How much is really needed for reasonable efficiency?

Windows Vista vs XP for non-networked, single person, home use.
This is a gift for a friend. I want to get enough but not pay for capacity that will not be needed. Added note - speed of internet may be limited by her connection which is in the mountains beyond cable services. Only wireless access
other than the snail paced dial up. Strength of wireless service varies from 2 to 3 bars - if this affects speed (which is another facet I do not know). Thanks and Merry Christmas.
