If I set my Windows update to automatic update mode (it says 3:00 AM every day), does my computer have to be on at that time?

It isn't a stupid question, but there are some stupid answers here...
Windows computers can not turn themselves on as far as I know so no you would have to leave it switched on.

And just to clear up a large amount of apparent misunderstanding amongst people answering, computers CAN turn themselves on if the switch is off as there is always a small amount of current supplied to the computer. My computer (Mac Duo) turns itself on in the morning to wake me up and show me the news, because I set it to do so.

Yes of course, otherwise it doesn't do the update. It will then simply pester you to do it later. Better to set a time for your PC to do it at a time you know you won't be using it - say during an hour when you normally watch TV or are out to dinner. That way you don't have to leave your PC on for an extended amount of time wasting energy.

You can set the time for anything you want. The update will be waiting for you when you start your computer.

Yeppers. you can change the setting to run auto update at a different time or, at startup. Just go into the options and make the change.
