My wife's boss is giving her an old computer from work so we can have a second computer. It is a 486 and I am wondering if it will work with DSL, windows, or ethernet cards before we accept it?

I have windows xp installed on the kids computer. I have no clue how it has been used the last few months. Now when you log on under any name it works for a few minutes and then nothing at all works. I cant even turn the computer off unless I unplug it. I have done virus scans and adware scans but nothing has helped. Everything works perfect in safe mode. What could be wrong and how do I fix this?

Ok here's the situation: I built a computer from scratch.. I got a custom biostart motherboard, an AMD athlon 2.2ghz 3700+ processor and a new case.. Now I removed the harddrive from my Compaq, which had a fried motherboard and I removed the CD RWs and the Floppy drive from it and connected them to the new custom comp.. Only problem is the windows XP which existed on the harddrive is being wierd cuz it gives me the screen of death r continuous restarting.. This is prolly cuz i changed the motherboard.. Now i'm trying to buy Windows XP on ebay and I dunno if the OEM will work r if I have to buy the retial version.. I hope u get the situation.. basically I'm trying to reinstall windows with a brand new package but on ebay the OEMs r much cheaper than the retails n i'd like to save money at this point.. so thanx for all the answers ppl..

Its really frustrating but usually everytime the computer starts, the start bar freezes but everything above that runs fine. So the window buttons on the start bar are still there even when I have closed those programs and the clock doesn't run. After a few minutes of waiting, the start bar unfreezes and the window programs I have closed disappear too and the clock immediately warps to the suppose-to-be time. What's wrong with this P.O.S?

The only way I can get rid of Hibernation is to uncheck enable AND put "Never for Standby in Power Scheme settings,and "Never" for Turn Off hard disks. Will this do any extra wear and tear to my Celeron (R) processor, etc.? How long can I SAFELY (and routinely) leave the Tower on? Can it receive updates, virus scanning, defragging,... with hard disks on and monitor off or in reduced power? Should I shut down every night?

My computer startup by itself when i just turn on the wall power switch and not the computer power panel switch. this happens everytime i turn on the wall switch and my computer will have a loud sound like the internal fan is spinning at a fast rate. why is this happening. Any help pls???

Hi. Now I have a 512MB Memory manufactured by Geil.
However, I want to add one more 512MB Memory.
Therefore, Should I buy the same brand?
Or Is it okay to buy another brand?

Actually, I want to choose Corsair.

It was working fine the last time i logged on but now all i get is this blanks dos screen with those words. i pressed ctrl alt del but that just restarts the comp and i get errror loading operating system again is a dos format. i cant even press f2 to enter setup. Will i lose my memory if i try to reformat. Is there anyother way to solve this.

I moved to a new house recently. When i connect the cpu and monitor to the ups and switch on the power, I get an electric shock on touching the cpu case. But when I disconnect the monitor from the ups and then try the same again there is no problem . This is the first time such a trouble occurs . Please help me !

Hey there,

I'm buying parts for a new computer and I have/going to have a Gigabyte S-series AMD motherboard, 256Mb Leadtek 7600GT graphics, an AMD AM2 Sempron 3400, 1GB Corsair XMS2, DDR2 and an 80gig maxtor HD.

Would a 580 watt power supply be too much/not enough for such a setup?

I'm fairly new to this building game so i'm too worried about fatally mucking it all up..
