Open up your case and look at the motherboard.
What brand is it and what is the model number? Look up the makers website and put in the model number. Check the specs to see what the maximum MB of memory your mobo can handle and what types of RAM it can take. I agree that you can mix brands but make sure that your mobo can handle 1GB or more of memory before you buy RAM. If your Mobo can handle a faster type of RAM than you have now though, you need to make sure all the ram sticks are the same type (ie. SDRAM, DDRRAM etc). I agree that Corsair is good. So is Crucial. Dont get some cheap off brand. You really get what you pay for with memory. I bought a pc once that had 512 MB of a cheap brand of RAM. It would crash if you played DVDs or 3D games. I replaced it with Micron RAM and it ran just fine.

With most QUALITY memory, as long as the one you add is the same type and of greater or equal speed, it USUALLY works just fine. After all, they are supposed to be made to the same specification.
Some brand though, they function at such a narrow margin, it *could* result in erratic behavior.
I cannot be specific as this is mostly trial and error. You should be able to mix and match different brands. I do it all the time and only few times, they did not work. (I used to work with hundreds of PCs)
Be sure to get the same TYPE and SPEED. You can exceed the speed, but you could never mix the type.

Most memory manufactures say not to mix their brand with another brand, but I believe it a marketing thing. Chunk the 512 you have, or sell it to someone who needs it and get a 1 gig chip by Corsair.

the only way it is really going to matter is if you want to run dual channel, if that doesnt sound familiar to you then just get whatever brand you want! just make sure you get the same type of memory eg. pc 3200, 2700, 2100.... etc.. you will run into less problems this way
