I have a Compaq that has been acting up lately. I had Windows XP Home Ed. installed on it. I was having problems because windows would not even load up. I attempted to perform full recovery on the hard drive. But it would freeze on the process. I assumed it must have been a windows, so I decided wipe everything and install Linux Mandrake on that machine. The computer still freezes during the linux intallation process. What could be causing this?

My PC at home keeps on freezing when I turn it on. The mouse stops working and the computer locks up. I have ordered another mouse today in the hope that is the problem - but has anyone else had this problem or heard of a virus that may cause this? Can anyone give advice? Many thanks!

I was wondering whether the new Intel Core 2 (2.4Ghz) processor is worth the upgrade or will dual core 3.4 Ghz do for my graphics and animation design?

Both processors will be used in conjuction with 4GB DDR ram and 500GB hard disk, and a 256MB 7900 nVidia graphics card :D

I used to have Macs when I was growing up, but when I moved out I could only afford a low-level PC. I got a better job now. So I want to get back on the Mac Bandwagon. I've been looking at the Mac Mini, but I want to know about people's personal experiences with them. So please be honest, if you have used one. Thanks!

Almost every time when I try to start Win Xp Pro a blue screen appears and it says " ***stop: 0x000000ED(0x812FAB08, 0xC0000185, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I can only turn the PC on by going to safe mode and then restarting it from there.

We have our PC hooked up to our TV, but because it is one of the upright kinds, it is just sitting beside the TV on the floor. I was wondering if it would be okay to lay it on its side (horizontal to the floor) so that we can fit it in our TV stand, like a DVD player, or PS2. Would this cause the computer any problems, or have any long term negative effects?

Seagate 250 GB HD
I did see some smoke and smelt burnt silicon on the harddrive. I know that my power supply works fine because when I unhook the harddrive and turn on the computer it works fine. Can someone explain what I can do to retrieve my data from it?

Will a downloaded movie (.avi, .divx, etc.) burn onto a DVD in 5.1/DTS surround sound?

I'm talking about one you'd download off of bittorrent or e-mule or whatever.

I have an AMD Duron 750 MHz which I overclocked to about 923 MHz, 256MB SDRAM, 266MHz FSB.
Before oveclocking my CPU, I converted videos, played games and music of course; I experienced that my processor is just awesome for games.
But when it comes 2 music or editing videos, my processor is just too slow. The videos I converted from my my DVD are just awful (I know I have used the correct software and I have tried as many formats), they hang every second. I know my PC does't have a virus or something. Even when it comes 2 playing music, my computer is sometimes too slow. Will overclocking be helpful? (Already done but right now I am using Linux.)
I am planning 2 buy a new processor. I have looked everywhere on the net and AMD processors show better benchmarks than Intel and are cheaper too.
I am really confused what 2 buy and if I buy AMD Athlon 4800+ will it give me the same problem as I have now with AMD Duron.
I play high-end games, lots of video editing and music. PS HELP!!!!!

Dropped my harddisk that i had taken out of my cpu. I put it back in but it can't be recognised by the machine. I can feel it spinning, does that for a while, then it stops suddenly. If i boot on a different machine with it as a slave.. i still can't access it in "My Computer". There is no physical damage to it.
Really need to recover data off of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
