I have an AMD Duron 750 MHz which I overclocked to about 923 MHz, 256MB SDRAM, 266MHz FSB.
Before oveclocking my CPU, I converted videos, played games and music of course; I experienced that my processor is just awesome for games.
But when it comes 2 music or editing videos, my processor is just too slow. The videos I converted from my my DVD are just awful (I know I have used the correct software and I have tried as many formats), they hang every second. I know my PC does't have a virus or something. Even when it comes 2 playing music, my computer is sometimes too slow. Will overclocking be helpful? (Already done but right now I am using Linux.)
I am planning 2 buy a new processor. I have looked everywhere on the net and AMD processors show better benchmarks than Intel and are cheaper too.
I am really confused what 2 buy and if I buy AMD Athlon 4800+ will it give me the same problem as I have now with AMD Duron.
I play high-end games, lots of video editing and music. PS HELP!!!!!

PS NOTE: I meant buying a new processor to buying a new configuration and simply not the processor for my old motherboard.
So which should I buy and don't mention anything about the IntelCore2DuoExtreme. I know it all and I can get the reviews after its final launch.

The Duron you currently have is not a good candidate for managing the activities you mentioned. Overclocking will not necessarily overcome the limitations of the architecture, and might actually decrease performance. 923 is slow, and your fsb is slow, not even 333. Durons are old. Software is new now. Linux complicates the issue.
AMD Athlon 4800+ is a perfectly fine cpu. You will need a new mobo, and new ram. You'll be just fine with the 4800+.

Well if you want to overclock yes, but I used to have an AMD Athlon 2000+ 1.6 ghz not oveclocked and I did find it had an overheating problem so I had to keep it up on the desk... if you are worried just use more fans for that if its over... if you know anyone with other processors see if you can work with them if they allow you so you know what to get but my advice is stay away from AMD period

an AMD 4800 won't be able to be compared to a Duron 750. The AMD chips are suitable-high quality. My previous workstation is an AMD 3200+, my new workstation is a 4400+ twin center. both workstation can play the most annoying video games available. believe me, an AMD proc could be worth it at only about two times the cost.

You're uh... running a little low on RAM there, buddy.
That 4800+ will not only deserve a new motherboard, chances are, it'll need one (and will need new RAM anyway).
Definately go with AMD for the gaming, though Intel's hyperthreading could potentially help with video encoding, as well as your average multitasking.

Go ahead and buy that AMD CPU one issue that is how little memory on your system. If you plan on editing videos make sure you have a high quality video card with 128 meg or more video memory, and least 1000 meg DDR memory.

What configueration you end up with is up to you, but I already see your current problem:
an overclocked AMD processor running linux.
Pfffft.

really sounds like a ram problem to me, my PC had only 512MB of ddr 266 bumped it up to 2GB of ddr 400 and never have had a problem again, but then again I don't know what the max you can put in your system.or even what you have
