OK
4gb of crappy ram is about $350, good ram is about $450
A 2.4ghz amd cpu would cost as much as a new core 2 duo, which is apsolutely amazing, and its undisputedly the fastest out there, even faster thant fx62. $300
sata hdd $100
Multisuperdvd drive $50
Good motherboard $200
GOOD GRAPHICS CARD $200
Case:$100

So about $1400

If you went down a bit to 2gb ram and a $100 mobo, it would be about $1000. It would still beat the crap out of the best store bought computer.
Either way, you save $500-$1000 by building it yourself.

Depends on if you want SLi or CrossFire.
A fairly compatent budget desktop can be made for bout $500 off of newegg.com.... you can get a Mobo for $80, case for $20, 160GB HD $90, OpticsDrive $30, CPU $150 (for the X2... not a 2.4, but it's just right for a budget PC)... the expensive part will be that ram, which is gunna run atleast $200 for the crappiest stuff out there... and the graphics card... although... if you have a SLi board... two 6600 PNY's in SLi will only cost bout $160.... and that'd be a compotent system... Don't expect to kick @$$ at 3D Mark with it, but it'll run just bout anything on the market, and will be Vista ready (except for the graphics card... but that's true for almost all cards)

You should be able to get that off the shelf from Best Buy or WalMart or one of the big stores for under $800, maybe under $600.
