My PC at home keeps on freezing when I turn it on. The mouse stops working and the computer locks up. I have ordered another mouse today in the hope that is the problem - but has anyone else had this problem or heard of a virus that may cause this? Can anyone give advice? Many thanks!

Thanks for all your responses so far - they are really helpful. The time frame that this happens in is just after switching the computer and getting into Windows. I know I have plenty of memory and also I have Ad-Aware installed but I will surely try to start it in safe mode though!
Many thanks for all your answers!

I think its the Problem of software. some software must be corrupeted & this happens due to installation & un installation many times. you should re install your operating system but you can start your windowns in safe mode & then re start in normal mode before windows Re Installation. Ram can be the other option...check your RAM also.

As the contributor "whatever" indicated it could be a virus and I agree with her/him. Also you could be very low on memory thus the computer takes so long to process any information..even the click of the mouse.
Try this...Switch your computer off using the power button. Pull the power cord from the socket in the wall. This ensures a complete cancellation of previous commands. Then plug the cord in again and restart. If the problem persists you need to have a profesional or someone who's really good at computers take a look at it. It may in this case very well be a virus and you need to have the computer purged and application re-installed. Make sure to save all you files (Not applications) and pics on an external storage source first Good luck!!!

I honestly don't think its the mouse. Have you regularly maintained the system? You need to delete old files and programs, run a registry cleaner, defragment the hard drive and check for malware.
I suggest you try booting in Safe Mode, you do this by restarting and after the bios screen loads (black with white writing) repeatedly press the F8 key.
Then immediately open the task manager by pressing control + alt + delete to see whats going on.
If the task manager says that the cpu usage is at 100% you have a problem. You'll have to try to stop some stuff from running to free up some space using the Task Manager. Problem is you need to know what you can safely turn off and what needs to run.
Try running your antivirus while in Safe Mode and see if it can find anything.
I'd suggest you get an engineer to help you with this one.

Now, that you know for sure your mouse is working OK, check your keyboard. It might have a problem that makes it to permanently keep a key pressed (or sending that information to the computer anyway). After you are shure your keyboard is OK, and the problem still occurs, try to change your video card (or at least it's drivers). If you think it's a virus causing that problem, take out the hard-drive of your home computer, put it in a working computer and scan it for viruses. Remove the viruses, if they are found, and put the hard-drive back in your computer.
I hope you solve your problem as soon as possible.

You've probably got spyware. Try starting it in "Safe Mode". When the computer is starting up, repeatedly press F8 (about twice a second is OK), until you get a menu of choices for starting your computer. Choose Safe Mode. If your computer starts up OK, then it's probably a software problem (e.g. spyware).
The mouse is unlikely to be the cause of your problem.

That is definately a software issue, not a hardware issue. If you don't have it already, download Avast anti-virus and Ad-Aware and SpyBot anti-spyware.
If your main system doesn't work at all, do this on another system and copy it to a CD. Install these on you broken system (from safe mode if you have to) and run them.

You have a virus. I hope that you backed things up. If you did virus scan that media with another computer with updated Antivirus. Then format you hard drive, and reistall your operating system off of the disk. Load your backup into your HD, and get all security patches.
Get antivirus and spyware protection, and keep it current with updates. If you didn't back up... tsk tsk

SunshineSmile honey this sounds like VIRUS or somewhere along there is a conflict in your registry. I would advise you to run VIRUS checker or if you are using win xp then just use restore point where your PC was functioning fine. That's all I can help with darling

Your processor might be to hot. It's not the mouse though. See if you can find someone who knows how to reformat a harddrive. That Solves just about every problem.
