Hardware - November 2007

Hey, I am planning on upgrading my RAM for my computer and I don't know nothing about it, I need help. I bought this DDR2 PC-4200 1 GB ram for my Dell computer which is really crappy and I tried to put in the RAM but it did not fix the notches on the memory card was in the wrong place so I had to return it. for my computer I only need one notch on the memory card if that is important..and I think the card taht was already in it was a PC-3200

I need help

1.knowing what kind of card I need to buy so it will fit.
2.how do I check how much my motherboard can support.
3. and anything else I might need to know before i go out and buy the card to put in my PC.

I only have 512mb but can only access 338mb of it , how much more memory should I add I am unsure if I should add 1 g , or more . I do play a high graphics online game ( second life) Thanks!

Will a widescreen monitor (max. res = 1440x900) work with a PC w/ Windows XP only using a 'RGB' input?? I know if a machine has a DVI output the computer can detect what a monitor's max resolution is..... but does the same apply to just using a RGB cable??

I recently upgraded my motherboard but it only has one IDE port. I bought a pci ide card that has two ports in it. I placed both my hard drives on one cable one set to master and on the end connector and the other set to slave placed on the middle connector. I plugged that one into the motherboard directly. the second channel has a dvd drive and a cd rom again one slave one master etc. this one is plugged into the pci card in the secondary port. none of my drives will run when they are plugged into the board but will run/open and close whe i detach them from the motherboard. I have tried cable select options etc. and switching ports in various combos... any ideas? am i configuring them wrong? should i be using the primary port and the ide port in the motherboard or the primary & secondary ports in the card without using the motherboard port?

I have been thinking of selling my computer to pay off some bills although I have never sold anything in my life so I was wondering how much do you think I could get for my computer. It is a Dell Inspiron 5100. Also where would be the best place to sell it either on the internet or in the trading post or maybe both.

Here it is: We changed a dimmer switch in the house which required turning of the electricity. Now my daughters computer (older HP Pavilion PC) will not turn on at all. Checked all the connections and there is electricity. When I unplug and replug the power cord from the back of the computer I see a quick green light near the power cord. But it goes right out and the front does not turn on. I had that happen before after a power outage and played around with the plug (holding it down for a while, replugging it) and it turned back on. Not this time. The computer is on good condition and clean. Thanks for the help.

i just don't know which one to get 8800GT or 2900XT ..many people says that 8800 is better ...then what are things that 8800 has more than 2900Xt cards i know 2900 card need lots power and its get hot..rather than that .....2900Xt has 512-bit memory interface,Type DDR3..even it has onbroad sound its own ..so what things 8800GT can do that 2900Xt can't ?

i don't want to go with GTS or TGX ...

on my other computer i had some problems with some sort of virus.it was then i decided to clean it up.when i used a utility for formatting,partition etc..(hirens boot dvd) i mistakenly erased the MBR.now i could not create a partition with fdisk.what utility should i use from hiren and what should i do now.though i have this computer(which iam currently using),thats a better on in specs and much faster.so i ought to fix ASAP.
