I recently upgraded my motherboard but it only has one IDE port. I bought a pci ide card that has two ports in it. I placed both my hard drives on one cable one set to master and on the end connector and the other set to slave placed on the middle connector. I plugged that one into the motherboard directly. the second channel has a dvd drive and a cd rom again one slave one master etc. this one is plugged into the pci card in the secondary port. none of my drives will run when they are plugged into the board but will run/open and close whe i detach them from the motherboard. I have tried cable select options etc. and switching ports in various combos... any ideas? am i configuring them wrong? should i be using the primary port and the ide port in the motherboard or the primary & secondary ports in the card without using the motherboard port?

okay, my motherboard IS an sata but it has one ide port. I tried to hook up just one dvd drive and my ide hard drive to the boards ide port.
when plugged into the board or up to eachother neither will run. ( ex. the dvd drive wont even open) but if i remove the ide cable and just leave the power cable in they function fine.

First set the biso to default setting.. the motherboard you have bought is a SATA these only have one ide port slot.... read the manual on how to setup the system without using SATA drives... you will need to disable the SATA ports and the raid ports in the bios.....(if your not using them)

Leave out the pci card for now you can install it later.

Make you're biggest hard drive master and cd/dvd slave on the motherboard IDE Port.. (reason it will be faster than the PCI card) then set up you're bios to boot first from the cd rom, then the hard drive.

boot up you're system.... press the Delete key (if this is the key to get into the bios) to make sure it as recognized the hard drive and cd/dvd. if that is working as it should then everything is ok... (your operating system should boot up)
if not then you will need to install it again, (hence first boot up cd/dvd)

Once you have you're operating system working then you can install the IDE pci card. and have the second hard drive on the first port and the cd/dvd on the second port.

you must have your primary drive (where your OS is) in the motherboard IDE connector. that connector can handle 2 drives , a master and a slave, if you have the right cable. The rest of your drives can be in the PCI adapter. Also, check your BIOS setup if they have detected them properly. for the PCI IDE adapter, you must run your OS first before you can use the devices attached to it provided you have installed the necessary drivers for it.

Your explanation is confusing, but are the ide cables known good for sure? Sometimes you can fit them in backward so make sure the red line is lined with pin 1. Have you checked your bios settings-if so what do they say? Have you tried setting up one device at a time. does your comp support this kind of setup...

You might need to install some drivers for that controller card. Just download them form the manufacturers web site.
