If your processor is:
Core 2 Duo
Turion 64
Turion 64x2
Athlon 64
Athlon 64x2

Then you have a 64bit machine.

If your processor is:
Celeron
Celeron M
Celeron D
Pentium 4
Pentium 4 HT
Pentium D
Pentium Dual Core
Core Duo*
Athlon
Turion

Then you have a 32bit machine. If you are using windows, then it really doesn't matter. The main difference between the two architectures is the size of the largest integer on a 64 bit system is 64 bits, and that 64 bits can allocate more memory (unlike 32bit architectures, which can only allocate up to 4GB).

Notice I said it didn't matter if you weren't using windows because the Windows' kernel is not architecture optimized. In other words, you won't get any benefits out of that, even if you are running 64 bit Windows, you are playing in a 32bit userland, since all your applications are still 32bits.

If you were using UNIX/Linux on the other hand...

* Core Duo processors have some 64 bit extensions, but they are still 32 bit processors.

If your PC is a laptop, it is 32 bit. Because of space and heat issues, they do not make a 64 bit chip for laptops yet.

To check, right click on the My Computer icon
Select Properties
On the General page, near the bottom right it will list the processor type.
Unless it says 64 bit, it is a 32 bit.

As far, as I find - processor itself in that one should support 64-bit extensions. However, from stability and practical viewpoint, 32-bit XP does make more sense to average user, so you should not bother too much. System designers made their job well.

64-bits become important mostly when you exhausted 32-bit capabilities. Which you did not yet, I believe? ;-)

Your processor can shelter sixty 4 bit, so as that is not a difficulty. the biggest benefit with sixty 4 bit is the actuality that it may shelter extra beneficial than 4 gigs of RAM, which I see you basically have 3 besides. nonetheless, i'd say pass sixty 4 bit because of the fact this is the destiny, and it is advisable to improve to 4 later besides. in case you pass to love perfect purchase you will see they supply sixty 4 bit structures regularly, besides as different shops too, because of the fact that's the place we are headed. procuring 32 bit at this element in time would not make experience imo. you will not have any difficulty looking courses that paintings on sixty 4 bit (your older ones you may have laying around won't paintings however), and the driving force concern is seemed after out too.sixty 4 bit is fantastic now.

If you want to find out whether you have a CPU that support 32 bit or 64 bit, use CPU-Z.

Or you can use Intel's CPU Identification Utility:
