Is there a software equalent to IBM's ThinkVantage Active Protection that can be used on other laptops? Basically to protect laptop hard drive from damage in the event of a physical crash of the hard-drive. For example, when you drop your laptop on the flloor, the hard disk shuts down before it hits the ground and essentially saves data.

I am not a techy kind of person so I really don't know anything about this...

I am planning to buy a PC in the near future, I was wondering that should I add a sound and video card to it or not. I was thinking I shouldn't because a motherboard has a video memory on it too, right? And there are sounds when you plug your speakers in...

What do these things actually do which the built-in the motherboard can't???

i have a fairly new HP pavillion desktop with a 3.06ghz celeron, 128mb nvidia video card, 160gb hdd, and 768mb ram. how much faster will it be if i max out the system to 2gb of ram? will there be a noticable difference when i play games? i have pretty much the best video card i can get for a PCI slot, and i still have to play my racing games in low detail at 800x600 resolution.
will the ram upgrade allow me to use higher detail and screen res?

I use my computer for all of my filing because I absolute hate paper work and it saves me money. However, everyone tells me it isn't a good idea because if my computer crashes I could loose everything; which is true. What type of device would you recommended to backup my files so if my computer crashes I can recover my files. I would also appreciate any ideas or tips for computer filing, or useful information as far as computers.

I also been told you can encrypt files or password them through windows; how do you do that?

I keep getting error message when i come to the end in trying to get the c518- printer, scanner and copier installed.... the msg number is hpqtra08.exe.. and also says no hp device have been detected....?????? i called the support unit and they seemed like they could not help me either...one service repr told me that i had to have a window icon in my local c disc drive... which is not there.... can you please assist me in anyway...,thank you .,.mjblanchard.....

It just started yesterday. Neither AdAware, Spybot, nor Avast has found anything, in normal or safe mode. I have cleared my cache, including the cookies and temp files in Windows, defragged, and run a disk cleanup. And I haven't downloaded anything lately. What else is there??
I'm running Windows 98 on a Dell with a 56k modem.

My HD failed so I bought another. The new one boots up and everything is fine. However I want to rescue my old files on the original HD. I have fitted the original HD aswell and can see it via My Computer etc. I can access all files and folders except for the ones in my personal folder. I was the administrator and I guess my password is locking it from access. How do I now access my files? Remember the HD won't boot and is now only visible via My Computer.

I'd like to spend no more than $600 if possible. The main function of the scanner would be to archive family photos (prints) and documents on rare occasions. Slides are not a concern for the time being as I understand you're better off with a scanner devoted to that purpose. Thanks!

why does this happen? is my pc not setup properly?

i have two lcd monitors hooked up to my graphics card, the main monitor displays fine, but the other monitor is clear in parts and blurred in parts. no amount of toggling the monitor settings seems to clear up the problem.

I wannted to connect to the internet thruogh telephone line, but wrongly I connect the cable to the electronic wire, now the modem does not work. I have today bought a new high speed 5 port usb 2.0 card and I put it into my computer and my windows XP picked it up and said it is ready for use, however when I plug my scanner, webcam or printer in they will not work, I scanned for new hardware and it said the usb devices connected are malfunctioned, so I tried them back in the "old" usb's and they work fine again, my old ports are quite old so I bought the new one, to speed them up. As recommended to do so by XP.
