Go to the device manager and uninstall the CD/DVD-RW by right clicking on the drive and select "uninstall", then restart the computer. That will reload the drivers, wait for the balloon message "Found New Hardware" in the tray to disappear. The drive should function normally after that. Also note that DVD drives will only burn certain brand names of blank DVD media, check the HP web site for the list of compatible blanks or consult your owner's manual for the list of blanks that will burn properly on your drive. Ridata blanks (DVD +R and -R) usually work and HP blanks will work for sure.

DVDs do not need formatting. They are not magnetic media. I believe that you need to go on the HP site, find the driver for it, and install it.

Nero and DVD shrink are two great programs, both for burning Dvds and finalizing them.
