It just started yesterday. Neither AdAware, Spybot, nor Avast has found anything, in normal or safe mode. I have cleared my cache, including the cookies and temp files in Windows, defragged, and run a disk cleanup. And I haven't downloaded anything lately. What else is there??
I'm running Windows 98 on a Dell with a 56k modem.

I'm also getting a lot of (not responding) messages when I hit CAD because a page won't open.

Hi, guys. Thanks for your help. So far, the only thing that's helped has been uninstalling Avast. (Not smart, I know, but it was a huge download).
The internet is what runs slowly.
I've cleaned out startup.
I don't know what or where swapfiles are.
I ran the registry checker (nothing) but I'm really afraid to dink with the registry beyond that.
The "pie chart" in c/properties looks like I have about 85% free resources; the one in drivespace looks like 1%; systems properties show 67% free. What to believe?

It was my monitor! The screen image started wavering this morning and making me seasick, so I swapped it out and now I'm back up to speed.
Thanks again.

There seems no problem with usage. The problem with Windows is that it slows down with time.
I am also using Win98 and it has become painfully slow in last few years. Infact, I reformatted it several times and still the problem persists.

The problem is actually with Microsoft, believe me.

Hold the Ctrl butoon, and while holding it hit the Alt button, and while holding these two buttons down, also hit the Delete button. This will open a window that shows you which APPs and Processes are running, In the Processes tab, if there is something that is taking up a lot of memory in order to run, you can try shutting it down, to see if the computer works faster without it running. (you may get a message saying that if you close this program, other programs may not work )...Don't worry about shutting something down that your not sure of. If you get into trouble, just turn your computer off and reboot. Everything will be returned to normal. In addition, you may try going to your main program menu, and click the program "Start-up" if you have it. If there is something there that is starting up when you boot up that you do not need, delete it from the start-up menu. The program will still be there if you need it, it just won't start when you boot up. That way, you may save RAM space, if you do not have a lot of memory, and this may speed up your computer. Generally, slow computers mean you've run out of RAM space, and the computer has to use your hard drive to swap virtual memory. Getting more RAM memory will ALWAYS speed up your computer. Good luck.

Question is your computer running slow of just your internet?

Has your system lost it's swapfile settings
right click My Computer-> Properties -> performance -> Virtual memory
if disabled reenable it
How much free disk space do you have?
if less than about 10% of capacity 5 times memory or 10 meg whichever is the greater then that can contribute.
By the way the only reason XP supposedly runs faster is because it is on a faster machine

Have you run a thorough scan disk as there may be a bad sector on your disk causing it to constantly reread the drive.

I think you done all the right things. However, you didnt mentioned that you cleaned your registry. This is usually the problem with Windows 98. Do a registry scan, if you find more than 25-40 errors. Its a clear indication that your registry is corrupted and causing your slowdown. Each one of those registry keys requires your computer resources. So even if they are corrupted or unused because you uninstalled a program or updated. They are still there eating up your PC resources and killing its speed.

In addition to your already taken steps like cleaning of cache, etc. also see how much free space is available in your C Drive ( I am assuming that your windows is installaed on C Drive).
If little free space is remaining like 10 to 25 MB, this can also be one of the reasons for slow performance.
Move your data to other partitions of the hard disk, and have more free space available.

Do you shut it down often? I heard that even if you shut your computer down properly everynight, it's not good for it. My friend described it as your computer having to "think even more than it has to already." Essentially, the more you turn it on and off the slower it gets and it takes a while to get back to normal.
