My HD failed so I bought another. The new one boots up and everything is fine. However I want to rescue my old files on the original HD. I have fitted the original HD aswell and can see it via My Computer etc. I can access all files and folders except for the ones in my personal folder. I was the administrator and I guess my password is locking it from access. How do I now access my files? Remember the HD won't boot and is now only visible via My Computer.

you have done the correct method by piggy backing the old drive with the new one to rescue all your previous data
the easiest way to access files with administrator priveleges is to restart the p.c in "safe mode" and then transfer the files while in safe mode
another method is to use a specific peice of software such as MigoSync(http://store.migosoftware.com/downloads.php?page=1&SourceID=DLHM)or Active@ Undelete Data Recovery 5.5(http://www.download.com/Active-Undelete-Data-Recovery/3000-2248_4-10646330.html)
these are both file management software and although different they basically do the same type of job
good luck mate

Is it an 'access denied' error or is it a 'can not read from device' error? If it is the latter, you can not do anything since, let's face it, you are working with a failed drive. If it is an access dened error then you should first take ownership (folder properties->security->advanced->owner) of the folder and then grant full access to yourself.

As you can see the files, and are hopefully using the same admin password on your new setup, why not copy the folder to your new drive, then re-boot?

the only way u can access those files is to download a Knoppix(linix on cd)

useing knoppix u can transfer any filles in ntfs or fat 32. knoppix dosen't care about passwords so u will be able to transfer all of ur old files to ur new harddrive and be able to throw away the old one

Maybe your personal folder is encrypted... there is a way to access it but it took a long time..

"Hard drive failed" means it D-E-A-D, dead.

No backup , you're toast.
