Is there any problem with my processor or .....what could be the reason?

When I turn on my comp it says the disk(internal) needs to be checked for errors. I can skip this or let it check. If I let it check it takes about 20 minutes. If I dont stand by my comp during startup, it will nit skip disk check. Why doesnt it fix the errors and quit disk checking on next startup? Thanks in advance....

I'm going to build a pc for an old friend of my dad. All he really uses the computer for is online banking, browsing the internet, and some basic computing functions. He doesn't really need a high end pc. My goal is to build him a very reliable pc for as little as possible. The OS I'll be putting on it is Windows XP Pro so I don't have to buy a new OS.

It looks like I can get a 1.86ghz Intel Core 2 Duo for a little under $200 or I can get a 3ghz Intel Pentium 4 for about $75. Which of these would be the better choice for basic computing? Will the dual core processor be needed or should I go with a high end Pentium 4? Will any other CPU better fit the bill? I'd prefer to stick with Intel.

My computer seems to supply power to external devices even after it has shut down. The keyboard lights remain on and power can still be drawn from the USB ports. I have one of those light-sensing self-illuminating USB webcams and its lights come on even after the computer has turned off. What should I do to prevent the computer from supplying power?

i have had the re-occuring problem of buying a new computer game and not having it work for one reason or another. Specifically i just bought microsoft flight simulator x but my computer wont let it run. Any suggestions for someone looking for a computer under 1000 bucks. this morning it was wet from a drip in the ceiling and i got on and after about 20-30 minutes it just..shut off on its own. originally i wouldve thought it overheated but then i remembered it was wet so..idk what the deal is. it was wet like..on top so idk maybe something got inside it. anyone know for sure?

My computer freezes (picture and sound). I suspect that the problem is memory (RAM). I heard that I can test it using some programs. Please tell me were can I get such a freeware program. My next option is to buy new RAM.

Im looking to buy one , but i want to be able to connect my digital DV camcorder in to it , I have been told that it has to have a firewire, is that right or is there an other way of doing it because most of the bottom end laptops dont have one? and is a DV link the same as a firewire link? also if there is anyone clever out there can you explain the jargon surrounding these "laptop/pcs"
