Dual core is a generic term: A dual-core device contains two independent microprocessors. Both Intel and AMD offer dual core processors.

Intel (desktop versions)
Pentium D 2005
Core™2 Duo Processor 2006
Core™2 Quad processor
Core™2 Extreme processor

Core™2 Duo Processor performance is much higher than the older Pentium D series.

Dual core is the use of 2 processors. Core 2 Duo is a particular implementation by Intel. The Pentium family since 1993 has increased performance by increasing clock speeds -- Intel Core Duo uses Pentium technology. Core 2 Duo instead focuses on improved usage of available clock cycles and power. More details are available here:

A dual core processors is in effect two processors running in one machine, although it is really one. An Intel Core 2 Duo is a faster dual core processor than the Intel Dual Core. They are both dual cores but Core Duo2 is a fatser one and a newer one.

Hai all for last 1 month am in search for the basic difference of perfomance, power etc of these two processors(Dual core and Core2Duo),just becase i wana take a new PC now am using AMD.I think of switching to INTEL.All my friends and other computer guys told me to take core2duo. BUT i was CONFUSED with the perfomance termssss. One of my friend "Kumar" he is using core2duo 6600 with Asus mother(Not check the model Any how cost of board is up to 10000) board and kingston 1gb RAM.And my second friend "DUNDU' is using Intel dual core 3.4Ghz,ie 945 Processor with 1 gb Kingston ram intel original 945 mother board.(Both guys are using ASUS 6600 GT graphic cald also). when i run vmware, virtual PC etc on both the pc's i noticed a BIG thing in case of core2duo its processor utilization is much more than the duall core and i surely say both the system are show equal perfomance i dint find any change... Now am thinking if i take 3.6GHz dual core (ie 960) it can give me more perfomance than core2duo.One difference than i seen is the power consumsion.. for core2duo its just 45w and for dualcore it was 65w.i check using software LOCALCOOLING. Those who are going to take intel machine PLEASE TRY LINK BELOW I Feel its realy GOOOOOD. CAN SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME WHICH ONE i go for Fully CONFUSED.
