Im looking to buy one , but i want to be able to connect my digital DV camcorder in to it , I have been told that it has to have a firewire, is that right or is there an other way of doing it because most of the bottom end laptops dont have one? and is a DV link the same as a firewire link? also if there is anyone clever out there can you explain the jargon surrounding these "laptop/pcs"

Even if it has Vista, you need a firewire port. Make sure it is the right firewire port: an IE1334 or something like that. It should look like a usb port with one rounded edge. A small firewire port is not he correct one. Or get a separate PCI crad. I got a cheap one with free software from BestBuy. This is the only way to transfer video to a laptop, unless the DV camcorder has a usb interface.

Okay sometimes some camcorders have wires that connect through usb but if yours connect strictly through firewire then you need one with the port. Never heard of DV link...
Okay if you mean Laptops and Personal Computers...

Laptops..
Better portability
More Vesatile
People like it more

PCS:
Not portable

Both function the same except things in laptops are smaller therefore most likely laptops are more expensive than PCS.

Also, if you want like extreme speed...laptops can get that but you would spend like a fortune. But you can get PCS with extreme speeds for a little bit cheaper.

My suggestion:
Get a laptop...you think about it...do you really want to go set at a desk??? Would you not rather take it wherever you go???

Dont go so high powered and high tech. I mean what is the point of getting high powered pcs... seriously they are thinking of better innovations every day..I suggest cheap computer, average power, couple of years and then get new computer instead of extremely expensive high powered computer and forced to have it for a lot of years because you spent a fortune on it.

That is up to you..

But here is what I recommmend:

Windows Vista Compatible(sticker on the computer that says this)
(people say a lot of bugs but I think they will fix it in a few years then you can switch)

Minumum 512 MB Ram...its good but if you totally want vista you need 1 gb or higher, not as a requirement but if you want good speed (thats what people say)

Harddrive(your choice)

Get one with fire wire port..

Rest all optional.

Hope this helps.

Yes you need fire wire to xfer video from a Camcorder. USB works for pictures but WILL NOT WORK for video. Don't get caught up in proprietary phrases. Does your Camcorder have a fire wire output? Seems mine has what is called DV link as well. You also need video software, Windows Movie Maker does a decent job for editing and compiling video on an easy scale and has a low learning curve.

Anyway all you need to know is you need a laptop with 1394 Fire wire connection. One more recommendation DO NOT buy one with an AMD processor, they run way hot and will shut down during heavy operation. I like AMD just fine but they run to hot for heavy video usage on a laptop. I have an HP and would recommend staying away from them. If I had it to do over again I would consider a Toshiba. Also I would check out CNET they have a lot of info there about Laptops and Video.

Good Luck!
