What is the reason? and How can I solve this issue?

What is the reason and solution?

More details:
I was trying to connect my mp3 player, a usb external hard disk, and my hp printer but none works in both my laptop and desktop. My OS is Windows XP. My laptop is vaio and desktop is Dell.

How many devices do not work? What kind of computers are you talking about? What operating systems are they running?
