Yes - PC stands for personal computer and yes, a mac IS a pc. But in order to make themselves unique, the term PC is now reserved for anything running the windows OS.

The main difference to you between the two will be the availability of application software. There are literally millions of different applications available that run on windows. Mac application software is much more limited, and is thus generally more expensive (less competition).

Both can do "most" of what you want to do on a daily basis. Macs are "considered" safer only because the viruses are intentionally targeting PC's - there is more out there to infect. In reality, BOTH are EQUALLY at risk and must be protected in many ways, INCLUDING educating yourself on how malware infections occur in the first place.

Think of it this way, you can drive in the wrong part of town with your door locked or unlocked...

Mac is way different than PC. They make it look like a PC so that more people buy it and then complain about it. There are so many wierd commercials out there. PC is a lot better than Mac. Mac's only hope is their iPod. Microsoft is selling so many computers and coming up with so many different things. Mac doesn't care less about new models. As long as people buy their iPod, they're fine. Without their iPod, they would've been out of business 10 years ago.

Macs have a totally different operating system called Mac OS X. The whole interface is different from Windows. Macs are way easier to use, you just have to get the hang of it. To experience Macs firsthand, go your nearest Apple store. You can use their Macs for free and they'll walk you through everything.
