I am currently fixing a computer for someone, and I believe that the one and only USB port on the laptop is shot, everything in it is loose and it doesn't detect anything. My first question is on the computer, there is a circular port in the back with small dots (holes) within it. What kind of converters do you put in that port that change it from its use as that port to a USB port. I have one but I don't know what its called.

And, also, can you recommend any fairly priced USB 2.0 hubs (preferable ones with 3 or 4 ports).

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro LAPTOP with a 900MHz processor (Intel) with 512MB RAM.

I have a Dell Dimension DESKTOP 800 MHz processor with 512 MB RAM.

I am running an engineering application on BOTH of them.

The Dell system will consistently do 850,000 calculations per second.

The Toshiba (with 100MHz more!) will start out at around 850,000 calculations and when I come check on it an hour later has dwindled down to 20k calculations/sec.

After I move the mouse around a little, the Toshiba begins increasing the rate of calculations (very slowly). If I stop the simulation and restart, it again starts off at 850K calculations per second.

This is really annoying. I have the power profile set to never go on standby, never turn off hard disks (ie. act like a desktop computer). Obviously something is not the same. Any ideas why the laptop is behaving like this? Any suggestions? Both are Win2k Pro SP4.

My Nvidia GeForce 7800 GC OS is not performing very good. I am getting low fps when i play counter strike source. When I was checking the Videocards properties I noticed that it said the location of the videocard was PCI Bus 1, but the videocard is AGP. Is that the wrong type of videocard for the slot?

I have a sound card that has been installed but it is asking for the Windows 98 disc, which I don't have. So I was wondering if it would be safe for my computer to install Windows XP, and not have any problems. Yeah, and like I said in the question my processor is for Wondows 98. So if you could give me accurate advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I have an old Gateway computer with a 500 mhz Intel Pentium 3 processor and I want to upgrade it to a better processor. Either a Pentium 4 or an AMD Athlon 64. I know that in order to do this I will need to swap out my motherboard. Is it possible to swap out my motherboard and would this cause any problems with my computer?

After doing some Windows security updates, when I try to copy and paste text from yahoo mail account, word 2000 will not respond. It just hangs up and crashes. I can still copy and paste anything else with no problem- only issue is text in yahoo mail. I've done all available Office 2000 updates, run a scan for errors, run all virus scans, etc. The only common denominator seems to be it was after some Windows updates. Any ideas for a fix?

My fiancé and I are going to buy a laptop for her 9 year old daughter and we want to get her one that she can play her games on, do her school work on and grow with for a few years. Yea I know she's only 9 but we are not talking about your average little girl. I am not concerned with her not taking care of a $1000 piece of equipment because of the values she has and the maturity level that this person embodies. (Yea, she's still nine, but...) We are looking at two laptops, one has the AMD and the other has the Intel Core and there is a noticeable price difference. So what's up with that? Help Please... :)

I think it is something partswise, but how do I fix, short of letting someone charge me $200 to run a virus scan, then more for the actual problem? System was slowing down, then unresponsive, then dead, but why would software problem cause mouse to overheat?

I use a window 98 first version operating system, pls advise of venue to backup large files. I had a floopy & a CD drive. Thought of using USB Flash Drive, but discover from Sandisk Tech Support that only Win98 SE version or up can use USD portable flash drive, and they recommend upgrade to Win 98SE. But contact Microsoft Tech Support, Win 98SE or Win 2000 version upgrade are no longer available for purchase or download support. Must buy Win XP. Please recommend venue to create backup for large files that I currently store on Win 98. Even if I purchase a new Win XP desktop, I still need to transfer files to new system. Thanks so much in advance
