I am currently fixing a computer for someone, and I believe that the one and only USB port on the laptop is shot, everything in it is loose and it doesn't detect anything. My first question is on the computer, there is a circular port in the back with small dots (holes) within it. What kind of converters do you put in that port that change it from its use as that port to a USB port. I have one but I don't know what its called.

And, also, can you recommend any fairly priced USB 2.0 hubs (preferable ones with 3 or 4 ports).

You can get adapters that will allow you to plug in a USB keyboard or mouse in a round PS/2 port, but nothing else. You can get those here...

If you'll need to plug in other things like a thumb-drive, you'll either have to get the port fixed, or buy a USB adapter card.

While hubs are inexpensive, it is not very practical for a laptop setup. I would recommend a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card. Check this out. For $35, you can get a 4 extra USB 2.0 ports.

The port that you are referring to is most likely a PS/2 port. PS/2 has 8 or 9 pins. S-video would have 4-6 pins. Either way, they would not convert to USB.

first off i would like to say that the funny looking port in the back is more than likely a s-video port...there is no converter for that to a USB port. secondly i am currently using a 4 port USB hub on my lap top and love it... i picked mine up at best buy for less that $30. but since your USB port doesn't work...you will need to buy a new usb card for the lap top....the bus type card is the best way to go there and then you won't need the 4 port hub idea...if you are any good with soldering then try soldiering the USB port back together.... I just did this on my desk top although i just did it so i could add more ports to the case in various places they weren't supposed to be.

Also i just noticed somone said you can't convert PS2 ports to USB. they are wrong check this PS2 to USB convertor out:

Your best bet is to replace the whole USB adaptor card, this one is cheap:
