I think it is something partswise, but how do I fix, short of letting someone charge me $200 to run a virus scan, then more for the actual problem? System was slowing down, then unresponsive, then dead, but why would software problem cause mouse to overheat?

exaclley I don't know why it would cause that but there are free scanners out there that should find the trick. for the mouse maybe just get a new one and see if it does the same thing.

Gee, I didn't know that a computer virus was so lethal. I can believe a crash of your hard drive, etc.
If someone at Best Buy told you this kind of BS and you purchased a new computer from them based on that kind of information, the only thing I smell is a possible lawsuit for fraudulent selling you something you didn't need.
This statement from that person sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. Man, I can't wait to see what kind of undiscovered stuff I can learn to do with my wireless mouse and keyboard. For now I'll try to zap your current computer by sending you this response via YA! Hows that?
Seriously, I would look further into the problem. Ask a REPUTABLE computer tech. I've always felt that these people at these electronic superstores don't know sh** about anything. They are trained like a car salesman to be slick with their words and get you to close the deal. Bam! They get that commission, that ignorant customer gets the pocketbook shaft! Think about it. I usually just come short of telling them to F off most every time I visit. They act like roving dogs looking for a BITE!

software shouldn't cause your mouse to overheat. it is probably a voltage problem. I recommend buying a new mouse and a surge protector. if that doesn't work and your not computer savvy i recommend buying a new computer. if your pretty good with computers try buying a new psu (power supply unit).

if you wanna run your own virus check download avg free from http://www.free.grisoft.com update the definitions and run a full scan!!

This sounds really odd, I have never heard of such a thing. If anything you would just need to replace your motherboard or perhaps your power supply. If you computer still starts up and works ok. I would also try another mouse. What else did they tell you at best buy. If you could keep me informed, very curious about this.

I dont know of any virus that would overheat your computer hardware. It sounds electrical to me. If i were to guess i would say its your mouse not your computer. Try a different mouse and see if that helps. Viruses affect software, sometime software that controls your hardware but it wouldn't actually damage it in that way.

change the mouse...if that doesn't work, open your computer up right now young man!...I'll wait.....................................ok got it open?...good...now see all that dust and debris in there?...yea thats the stuff...now clean all that out and remove the cpu fan and heat sink...now wash and dry the heat sink coz it's clogged w/ all kinds of crp...(remem to unplug the dam thing)...ok now that everything is spick and span check your motherboard for burned spots...(you will also want to clean out all the fans from dust and dirt...if everything looks ok...no you missed a spot...I said clean the WHOLE THING out!...............................ok thats better...now plug in your pc w/out putting the cover on and watch the thing run...make sure the fans are working and everything is good to go...if it smells like it's still burning try to localize where the problem area is coming from....if it's a burned circut on the mother board the board will have to be replaced...fans out?...same drill...this concludes stargazer6440's class on pc maintenance.....now let's check out the chicks in the parking lot ;)..

Tech at Best Buy, if that isn't an oxymoron, I don't know what is. You probably have a short in your mouse circuitry.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
