you should buy a laptop cooling fan from your local electronics store (bestbuy / circuit city/ or even newegg or tigerdirect.com). they plug in to one free usb port and sucks the hot air and blows it away from the laptop.

Well there are two solutions. Your fan might be too small so try upgrading it (might not fit (that's a problem)) or buy an external fan or a notebook holder that has a fan. An external fan can plug into the USB port but I'm not sure whether that would have much effect but a holder with a fan could be effective (there about the size of a notebook only just bigger) and they are cheap, only about $30 from a office store.

Make sure you are utilizing the Power management features either through your BIOS, or if you are using XP - Power Options (in the control panel)
One of the biggest culprits are the Monitor power settings. Make sure you set the monitor to Time-out: 2-3 mins on battery ~ 3-5 mins on AC Power.
Hard disk Time-out: 4-6 mins on battery ~ 6-7 mins on AC Power.
Suspend or System standby 10 mins max on battery or AC Power.
Also, be sure that the BIOS is set to: "Automatic" for CPU performance, not "Maximum" performance.
Always use you laptop on a level, flat surface (i.e. Desk, Table) - with no clutter in the surrounding area. Never on a pillow, bed, or your lap.
Do not use, or store your laptop in a dusty\dirty environment.

I had this same problem last spring. The computer guy on campus told me to turn my laptop off each night instead of having it running at the time have it overheating. When a laptop overheats it won't run propertly. So turn it off each night and you will see that you will have solve your problem.

Yes...take two empty TP or paper towel rolls and set your laptop on them, it's overheating from the bottom, not the fan on the side.
