Hardware - October 2006

My USB seems to be broken, but according to the Windows device manager, it's working.
I plugged in my iPod and it charges, but it can't read the iPod. I tried an external HD and the PC can't read the HD. I tried updating the drivers, but they're all updated.
How can I tell what's wrong with it? Will I need to take it to the shop? Is there a software that can tell me what's wrong with it?

my grandson spilt some juice all over keyboard. is there any wwwwway to fix this other than buying a new keyboard. many of the letters repeats or if i wwwwant to backspace i lose my wwwhole sentence. can i pry the keys up and wwwipe them off with a cleaner and then replace them. has anyone else had this problem? any ideas welcome, as long as its a home remedy. really don't want to purchase a neeeew keyboard.

i asked the question about biulding a cheap but good gaming pc and most have replied with dont. Well i allready have a pc with 128SDRAM 128 L2 100mhz bus,20 gb hard drive 3D AGP graphics card so what can i do to this to make it into a good gaming pc or am i best just buying a new pc in which i dont really want too

I want to try and build a cheap but good gaming pc and woundering, has anybody done this? how much did it cost? and can you just add anything to a motherboard i.e installing a couple ov 1mb ram and a gaphics card and then is that it or do you have to purchase extra components to make it run effiiciently

I have the screensaver "flowerbox" on and the background should be black BUT all of a sudden the background turned a light grey! Also, the desktop background got smaller.........I was able to fix that (mostly) but nothing I have done corrects the grey background! HELP!

Laptop dvd drive not working, reads no media (cd,dvd)- just whirs and stops. I thought it was laser maybe so was thinking it needs replacing. Then I hooked up an external drive and the same thing happens! Only the OS cd works in the external drive. Can anyone PLEASE tell me what to do, because not even the manufacturer knows- they tell me to uninstall the drive (NB it is visible in window!l windows from scratch. Surely there is another way? Help please !!!

I have a Packard Bell lappie about 3 years old. I have broadband and have the comp on most of the day everyday. Recently the plug socket has been getting burning hot and then after a cpl of minutes it just switches off without any warning. I've heard of fans that can be inserted but i don't know anything about buying or fitting them.

I got a virus the other week, so i tried to backdate my computer, it took ages and i got annoyed, and turned it off. when i turned it back on it went onto the blue screen and said i had problem number "0xc0000142" and a message saying that the system would be shut down. please only answer if you know what you're on about, cos cocky answers are just a waste of time
